FAQ

1.- How old is your company?

Sigma Marine U.S. is 1 year old. It has been in operation since 2007 under the Pilgrim Industries name. Our parent company was founded in 1977 in Peru. Our International Company (ACS International, Inc.) was formed in 1981 and merged into our newly formed U.S. trading company (ACS Trading Corporation) in California in 1989.

2.- How long have your fertilizers been around?

We started selling fishmeal and fish solubles to farmers in Europe in the early 1990’s. Fish Powder Fertilizer, Fish Powder Formulas and Hydrolyzed Fish Fertilizers were formulated in 2006 and started shipping to Japan in 2007.

3.- Where are your products manufactured?

Various products are produced in multiples countries: India, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Morocco.

Most raw materials are native to the listed country. However some ingredients are imported. (eg: Food-grade enzymes from Denmark and the U.S. used in our hydrolyzed fish fertilizer. Some ingredients in our proprietary formulations originate in Japan and China) Of course, these ingredients also have to pass stringent quality controls before we can include them into our products.

4.- In what other activities has your company been involved?

For over a quarter century our parent company has been involved in fishing www.frozenfish.com/chile.htm – Fishmeal, Fish Oil, Health Food Supplements (Omega-3 fish oil, shark cartilage, chondroitin sulfate, shark liver oil), and several natural herbal products from the South American rain forest.

5.- Do you have distributors in other countries?

Yes, we have distributed products under private label in Japan and Europe.

6.- How is the quality of your products?

Premium quality. All of our products meet stringent requirements for purity and efficacy.

7.- What are the main ingredients used in your powder and hydrolyzed fish fertilizers?

Fresh whole wild-caught fish, such as anchovies, sardines, ribbon fish and trimmings of mackerel and cat fish used for food purposes. Sardines, anchovies and mackerel are fish species abundant in most oceans and reproduce quickly.

8.- Why mainly sardines and anchovies?

Sardines and anchovies are the preferable fish to extract fish oil as both are very oily fish and loaded with beneficial fatty acids (EPA/DHA). Fish oil derived from sardines and anchovies are the top 2 raw materials used in pharmaceutical grade Omega-3 Fish Oil softgels that millions of people take every day. Since sardines and anchovies are short lived and at the bottom of the aquatic food chain that feed solely on plankton, and therefore do not concentrate heavy metals, such as mercury, and contaminants as do some other larger fish, sardines and anchovies are healthier.

9.- How can you guarantee that the product I purchase is the product I will receive?

Société Générale de Surveillance S.A. (SGS) sgs.com a Swiss world leader inspection company continuously monitors production, packing, and stuffing of containers. SGS also takes samples of the material prior to sealing the containers. Samples are taken to their laboratories for analysis and issuance of certificates. You can view certificates in the Documents / Certificates / MSDS.

10.- What are your manufacturing methods and quality control?

Fresh whole wild-caught fish and fish trimmings are delivered daily. More details can be found in each product page.

11.- What is the difference between low grade fishmeal used as fertilizer and your fish powder?

Low grade fishmeal consists of the trimmings and leftover of fish. It goes through the standard fishmeal manufacturing process (chopping, cooking, extraction of oils) removal of stick water (used to reduce to fish emulsions), hot dry heating and grinding.

Our fish powder is made with whole fresh fish that is sun dried and then grounded. The entire process is natural. The whole fish is used. No oils, collagen or proteins are removed. You can see a Chart explaining the differences in the Sigma Fish Powder Page

12.- What certificates are issued and who issues them?

SGS (sgs.com) or an equivalent inspection company (Bureau Veritas, Cerper, Cesmec) issues the certificates. Some certificates are included as they are required by the exporting country. Others are available for a nominal fee. The following are common certificates and may or may not apply to all shipments or destinations.
